Five months from the biggest entertainment launch in history and there is still no Trailer 3, no pre-orders, and no gameplay. But while fans are waiting, Sony and Microsoft are quietly panicking — and today we break down exactly why.
Sony locked down exclusive marketing rights to GTA 6 and is using it as their entire PS5 upgrade pitch to tens of millions of PS4 owners across Europe and beyond. No trailer means no hype, and no hype means their console upgrade numbers take a real hit. Microsoft is in an even worse spot — with roughly 30 million Xbox Series units against 91 million PS5s, they need this game to move hardware and they have zero control over when Rockstar moves.
Meanwhile, Rockstar is completely unbothered. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed marketing begins in late June or early July, which means Trailer 3 and pre-orders are likely just weeks away. But every day it doesn’t drop is another day the entire gaming industry sits in a holding pattern, waiting for one studio in Edinburgh to give them permission to start selling.
This isn’t just a GTA story. This is about who actually holds power in the games industry right now.
